Suns Out Guns Out!

Back to school means back to the gym! Here at Govs we love to hit the gym just as much as we hit the books for studying...AKA a lot. Getting in shape and "getting big" is something we fellow Governors aspire to do, athlete or not. Each day when the weight and cardio rooms fill up quickly, we know that with all the hard work and dedication in there, comes blood sweat and tears. So slap on your sweat band, grab a bottle of water, and tie up those laces to come on down to the Governors gym to have some healthy fun!

Welcome back fellow grillers!

Hey Govs Grillers! Sadly, our previous bloggers Ali Grenier and Claire Lilly have graduated, and therefore resigned from The Grill, leaving us to be the new editors. Our names are: Christy Ray (boarder from Bermuda), Julia Healey (day student from Merrimac, MA), Isabel MacLeod (boarder from Wesport, CT) and Amy Levenson (boarder from New Castle, NH). We are all currently seniors of the Governor's Academy, and are so excited to start cookin' up some spicy stories on the grill! Be sure to tune in for our weekly updates and posts! xoxo

dogget dorm

photo cred: boong chamnanratanakul '13

new dorm's new name

okay so the grillers just found out that the "new dorm" is now called "doggett dorm" in honor of mr. and mrs. dogget! the new dorm has gone unnamed for far too long (about four years) which was slightly strange to say. outsiders never really understood our "new dorm" sweatshirts. but now it is all figured out  and we strongly approve of the name change! the doggetts will be missed next year!

    accent attack

go govs! (add accent if desired)

if you walk around govs for a day you will meet people from britain, australia and maybe a few other places that might not exist. we are one tricky school because most of these people aren't from britain or australia or their pretend far off land. accents are taking over our campus. even the grillers (us) have fallen into this trend. it is hard to go more then 10 minutes without hearing a different accent and once you start speaking with one...its difficult to stop. this trend is so popular that some claim it to be 'annoying' but us grillers find it awesome. go govs for switching it up. there is no doubt we are quite the diverse campus this spring!

    CD RELEASE

the release is finally here! after two years of working on the cd ali is getting ready for her show next weekend. the party/show is on saturday (may 7th) at 7pm right on campus in the performing arts center. to start off the night ali will be performing a few of her songs, followed by food and drinks in the PAC lobby. ali is so excited to have this chance to perform a few songs but also to talk about her cd and all the work that has been put into it. there will be cds available for purchase after her performance. it should be a very relaxed night and definitely a lot of fun!

the cd consists 10 original songs that ali has written after the past few years. she worked on the cd with Tom Eaton, her producer, at his studio right in Newburyport. she was able to spend time recording and working on production as her afternoon activity (in place of a sport, drama, etc.). she requested the project as a special activity and was very excited to get to work.

it has been quite the process but definitely an exciting one.
we all look forward to next saturday night!

    90's quiz

    nfl quiz

tHis pAst tuesday was extremely rainy and left many students feeling "lazy." in an effort to do something fun a friend brought us to the library where we were introduced to sPorcle. we don't know where sPorcle has been all of our lives but it is prettY awesome. we were in the library 4 a couple of hours taking quizzes on 90's music, nfl teams, the office, 2rue bl0od, company slogans and many, many more. it's funny because you end up realizing that you know way more than you think you do. we strongly recommend visiting sporcle.com if you want to have a good time ;). yayy sporcle!

    prom prom prom prom

getting closer and closer every day to the month of may and this means prom season to many. here at school students have already begun to ask their special someone. every year we are always a little surprised by the early start.

the first part of prom this year will take place at the romantic crane estate in ipswich and will later move to a cozy river ride under the stars. rumor has it that this new location will allow the ladies to take their shoes off...let's hope this ends up being true. as you can see above these eight love birds have already claimed their dates. everyone watch out because the hunt for that someone special has officially begun. ahhhh!

    sstp

    greg rooney '11

during the spring senior's have the opportunity to do a senior spring term project. in order to do this they must go through an application process that includes several steps. One of these steps is getting this idea passed by a group of faculty members. many students love this opportunity to pursue something that they are interested in and do not have enough time to work with in school. we interviewed greg rooney '11 to talk about his project.

grill: what is your senior spring term project this spring?

greg: we work the &*)(()&%&  boat shop (name is confidential) in amesbury.

    grill: whose we?

    greg: mike george and i.

    grill: what do you do?

greg: we're fixing a boat which we have no idea how to do and we're also building a "deck-dock"

grill: why did you decide to do this?

greg: i wanted to learn something different and it seemed interesting.

grill: is it difficult manual labor?

greg: the boat is tedious and time consuming and it gets wicked annoying. i got my shoes wet today. mike never lets me order what i want when we stop for fast food.

grill: what do you think you will gain from this experience?

greg: a new hobby maybe...possibly. i saw a dead seal today.

grill: oh no. what happened with the seal?

greg: the guy picked up the seal and brought it inside to dry. i think he's gonna use its skin for seal seat covers on the boats. he thought it was a log. i think that's probably illegal...don't let this get out...dont let this out...seriously...dont tell anyone this...seriously.

grill: thanks greg. good luck with everything!

    crutches creep onto campus

    Rory Burke '11

    Todd Moores '12

injuries galor! there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of injured students  these days. it's sad but true, all over campus we try to give a helping hand as they hobble by. because of this crutch epidemic the grill has decided to figure out what happened to a few of these unfortunate souls.

rory burke: injured his hip while playing hockey this year. he continued to play on it which made it worse, but also won him the most valuable player award for the 2010-2011 season (congrats flor!). rory recently had surgery and is now on crutches for a few weeks.

todd moores: tore his acl while playing basketball this winter. it is unknown how long he will continue to be on crutches but the road to recovery is bright todd, keep your head up. we love you.

a few more you might see crutching around campus:

    natalie azarela '12
    ryan macri '13
    ashlyn bedard '14
    megan mullin '12
the grill wishes everyone a speedy recovery!

    t-shirts available in the bookstore

finally! three young men have joined the governor's academy dance company for the winter season. this is the first time we have seen guys involved with our dance program since 1994. the dance show is this weekend and we are really excited to see what kind of moves they've been hiding. all the dancers, boys and girls, have been working really hard for the upcoming show and we hope to see a lot of support. chris robinson from the bookstore created these t-shirts to emphasize the importance of these three bold men and their decision to break the gender barrier. we can't wait for the show!
